In The Know-- Milk&Honey Shoes

29 February 2012

Good morning Chicklets!

I am finally awake after waking up in the middle of the night in a creative process and did not go back to bed til 6am in the morning but it was worth it..

I am now currently working on some creative ideas that I will launch in the next month in conjunction to my 36th birthday. So many changes going but I am so excited.

Now here's a question. Who are you, like me, wear a size 10 (40 EU) or bigger and can never find shoes--I actually wear a size 11 (41 EU), but that's semantics. I know, I have snow skis for feet, but I am nearly 5'8" and in my defense I did not steal them, I inherited them.

On top of having big feet, I also have a shoe fetish which depresses me at times because I can rarely find amazing shoes to fit my feet, until now. I mean a girl my height loves wearing high heels so that I can intimidate men, or at least try..

Milk and Honey Shoes is the site for us large feet girls who want to have a designer look. Here you can design your own luscious shoes and not worry that they will not fit or look like old grandma nurse maid shoes--you know the ones that squeak **shivers**. Or worse, we will no longer be relegated to Birkenstocks because they are the only shoes that fit.

So get on over there and start creating and post your creations here. I wanna see.. Until then, check out my creations...

In The Know--Joan Smalls on the cover of Vogue Italia

Vogue Italia's editor Franca Sozzani is rebelling making a break away from her other Vogue counterparts yet again by putting another afro-latin model, in this case Joan Smalls, on its March 2012 cover. Proving again why I heart Franca and Vogue Italia.

We recall Joan from her photo shoot with Steven Meisel for Tom Ford. I swooned over this shoot.. Of course every time I see Tom Ford or his creations I get girlie wood..

#OverTheTop is another shoot by famous fashion photographer Steven Meisel and will be on the newsstand this week. Vogue.it has a full story on the shoot and a GIF slideshow. This issue will more than likely boost sales for the magazine like their Black issue in 2008 did. In fact, that issue was so popular they had to re-print it twice.

Below are a few snapshots from the shoot:

Foodie Tuesday--Saint Genevieve

28 February 2012

Its Foodie Tuesday and I have a great recipe and foodie review just for you.

Since I am now on my health kick that will be for a lifetime ;-). Anyhoo, since I am sentenced to healthy eating--trust that I am not lamenting missing certain foods but just eating less of it--I wanted to share with you all one of the recipes I conjured up this weekend because it sounded good in my head.

Saturday I decided to grill some mahi mahi and smother it in a coconut curry. I then laid it on a bed of almond infused basmati rice. Let me tell you it was delish.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

Mahi Mahi:
1 filet of Mahi Mahi
2 Tbs of Coconut Curry Powder
1 Tbs of Curry Powder
1 Tbs of Black Pepper
1 Tbs of Green French Sea Salt
1 Tbs of Cumin
1/3 cup of unsweetened almond milk

Rice:
1 cup of Basmati Rice
1 garlic clove diced
1/4 red onion chopped
1/3 cup of almonds cut into slivers
1 bouillon veggie cube
Salt to taste

Directions:  Pour all seasoning ingredients into a small bowl. Add almond milk and whisk until completely blended. Using a small pan drizzle olive oil into the pan and warm up. Place mahi mahi in the pan and cook on one side until white then flip over and cook on other side. Once the mahi mahi is cooked through. Pour in seasoned mixture and let it cook for five minutes or until it cooks through the mahi mahi. Let sit until rice is done.

Using a medium size pot, drizzle some olive oil into pot. Add chopped onions and garlic and cook until aromatic. Add bouillon cube and stir until brown. Add water until it begins to boil. Once it is boiling add rice and almond slivers. Turn heat down and let cook until water boils out. Turn off heat.  Scoop rice onto plate and lay the mahi mahi on top.

Voilá, a healthy yummy meal. :-)

Saint Genevieve Upper Kirby, Houston, TX

I was invited to this swanky little place last week by a good friend of mine and I am glad I went. The place was reminiscent of a 1920s bar like the Cotton Club and it was dimly lit. There were leather settees and high bars everywhere.

The place was filled with the jet-set and power players of Houston. The crowd was ethnically diverse and well dressed. The music was house and the top 40 and there was a performance by a belly dancer.

They had great dishes such as Lavender and Goat Cheese Puffs, Spicy Spanish Meat Balls, Pan y Tomate con Jamon and Mumbai Chicken.

Being the rebel that I am. I decided to partake in the most stereotypical meal on the menu. Of course the only people that know about this stereotype are southern people because when I mentioned it to my friends from the north there were crickets singing in the background.

The Mumbai Chicken consisted of fried chicken strips laid on top of a bed of cubed watermelon and sprinkled with mozzarella cheese. A teriyaki sauce mixture was drizzled on top.

I must say the dish was delicious and although I should not have eaten it due to the breading--trust and believe I suffered later-- I am glad I did had the experience.

All in all I would definitely recommend this bar to Houstonians or anyone visiting. The ambience is spectacularly chic and the food is reasonably priced yet tastes like a five star restaurant.

Two Chic Shimmies for this Restaurant-Bar.

D & G Velvet Collection- A Review

26 February 2012

Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana have done it again by launching their first limited edition unisex parfum line. I was introduced to it by the lovely Nikki H. that works at the Saks counter in the Galleria Houston.

She was kind enough to give  me the background of the fragrance line and allowed me to try them so that I could decide which one I wanted. Here's a little information on this lovely collection.

The six fragrances ($195 for a 50 ml bottle) are each inspired by different parts of Italy and the designers heritage. The collection comprises of Velvet Sublime, Velvet Love, Velvet Desire, Velvet Vetiver, Velvet Wood and Velvet Patchouli and are only sold in six locations in the United States one being Saks Fifth Avenue, Galleria Houston.

Velvet Sublime - inspired by the orange groves of Sicily. Its notes comprise of sun warmed acqua with a splash of Sicilian Mandarin, joyful orange blossom and neroli.

This particular scent is my favorite and  truly reminds me of the coastal city of Catania where I lived for two years. The scent its spicy but sweet like the middle aged Sicilian women. It was uncanny how much the scent flooded my mind with memories of the blood red orange trees and blossoms in springtime in Motta S. Anastasia.

Velvet Love - by the carnations of Lake Como. Redolent carnation flowers envelope oriental notes as ylang ylang and pepper break free. This scent is a mix of spicy, sweet and floral and is definitely for the young at heart.

Velvet Desire - inspired by the Renaissance period. "Infused with fulsome white flowers and explosion of gardenia and tuberose. A hint of frangipani makes it quite sophisticated."

This scent is very floral and sensual and reminds me potently of the Florentine women walking through the mercato di pelle in high heels on cobblestone roads. It strangely reminds me of the Medici gardens and courts tho I never lived during that time but I believe that the women of the court at that time would have worn a scent such as this. It is my second favorite.

Velvet Vetiver - inspired by the scent of the Mediterranean summer. "Classic, sumptuous cologne effect of vetiver and galbanum blend with a contemporary pique of Mediterranean fig. Solar and understated, with a sense of refined elegance"

As soon as you open the sniffer of the scent vetiver assails your senses. I knew right away what it was. It is so green and summery and smells like summer nights in Sorrento. It too, its a mediterranean and spicy. It makes me want to kiss someone and is my 3rd favorite scent.

Velvet Wood - inspired by lacquered wood.  "Rich ebony wood offers profound depth, with warm resinous notes yielding to attractive benzoin and refined black leather."

This scent is the most masculine however it smells amazing on women. It is my 4th favorite of the set. It is very exotic and for some reason reminds me of Rome.

Velvet Patchouli - inspired by iconic incense. "Intense, luxurious patchouli oil drenched with kephalis cedes to a rich, musky presence. Dominant in present and statement, exudes strength."

This scent reminds me of the crowded streets of Milan. Its sophisticated yet aloof and a bit rebellious like the people of that northern city. This one ties at 2nd place with Desire.

Make sure to stop near a Saks and test them out.
