Buon Anno, Bonne Année, Happy 2011!!

Sono in ferie

21 December 2010
Its the holidays, even for those who do not celebrate Christmas, me included. My blog is taking a break until after the first of the year. I am going south with my friend for Christmas. We will be in Foggia, her home town. No one wanted to leave me alone in Bologna without a friend in the world. And since I do not have the extra cash to travel the best thing to do was to travel home with a friend. I am grateful to her.

Another friend will be visiting me on the fifth of January. He is coming in from the States and I cannot wait to see him.

I want to wish all of you Buone Feste, Happy Holidays from Odissea Italiana. Enjoy this time with family and friends and take nothing for granted. I hope your winter solstice and New Year get off to an amazing start.

Make sure to follow my writings on The Examiner. I will be writing about traveling and culture in Italy. Separately from this blog. Until next year, toodles!

Photo Workshop

19 December 2010
It's what I have been up to lately. I went to a workshop this past Friday in the snow or as they say in Bologna, ice, to build my portfolio and get my name out there as a make-up artist.

While studying I need to find my niche, a spot carved out for me so that I do not have to be concerned about money for a while. That is the only glitch in my happiness right now, money. I have been offered a job teaching English in Milan 3 days a week while I am in school starting in February. Hopefully, I am able to find a job in Bologna instead. I will begin looking in January. At the moment it is the holiday season and Europeans are on vacation at the moment and not concerned about my woes.

However, I was invited to a workshop on Friday to be the lone make-up artist for a photo shoot of six models and photographers, Andrea Bernardi, Massimo Persiani and Luca Guidetti. The event was organized by Veronica Rubini. The workshop went well despite the fact that it was snowing and the meet-up spot was outside of town. We met in a cool American Bar ran by Francesco called Casinò Café. Weather permitting, the next event will be better and maybe I will get paid this time. But until then enjoy a few of the photos I have received so far. As the rest come in I will post them here. My models wore looks inspired by an Ice Queen, Golden Goddess, Babydoll, Cleopatra and Cat Eyes.

Sei Pazzo

15 December 2010
Pazza/pazzo/pazzi/ pazze- crazy

Sei pazzo/a= you are crazy or mad. Yes I know I am crazy but let me give you a bit of a history lesson today.

The Pazzi family were a noble Florentine family of bankers who originated from Il Pazzo, one of the first soldiers over the wall in the Siege of Jerusalem during the First Crusade--which was the only Crusade campaign that the Christian empires won--in 1099 A.D. against the Ottoman Empire. The Pazzi family were open rivals of the Medici family and being frank, they were quite jealous of their power and wealth and wanted to usurp their rule over Florence, therefore they cooked up a crazy, pazzo if you will, scheme to depose the Medici family by killing Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano during High Mass on April 26, 1478 at Il Duomo before a crowd of 10,000 people. Giuliano died from 19 wounds inflicted upon his person by a mob that included members of the Pazzi and Salviati families and a priest. Lorenzo was rescued by humanist Poliziano escaping with non fatal wounds and reappeared later in the safety of the sacristy.

Francesco de Pazzi, Francesco Salviati and a few priests and others were hung by a Florentine crowd in support of the de Medicis for what was later dubbed the Pazzi Conspiracy. It was because of this incidence and the craziness of the Pazzi family that word pazzo is now synonymous with craziness or madness in the Italian vocabulary.

The Renaissance was an amazing and intriguing period. Pulling the world forward kicking and screaming into modernity. There was love, romance, conspiracies, debauchery, the birth of art, science and modern astronomy. There were empires collapsing and being born and history being made that will change people and empires the world over. This was a time where a family of merchants could become a part of royalty and the richest family in Europe during this time.

The Renaissance proved to be an era of endless possibilities.

La Maison de McRae

11 December 2010
Is my new blog named after my Great-great grandmother Louise McCray (McRae). Being the scholar that I am, I want to give you a little history on the name McRae. My blog title implies that it is the house of a king. Rey is the old Spanish word for King. Any form of the word--Rey, Rae, McRae, McCray, McRey, Reyes, Roy, Rei, Rè, Ray etc-- signifies that that particular family was nobility. Of course my forebear inherited the name from her slave owner but I digress. I decided to create this blog so that I would not bore my followers here with my love for all things fashion, including home decor, fashion, make-up and wedding inspirations.

Eventually, I am planning to open an online store with some of my creations once I am settled in here. I am planning to sign up for TEFL so that I can begin working in January to refill my rapidly depleting coffers and coming up with other ways to use my talents to stay afloat. I think those who survive during tough times such as these are those who are very adept and inventive--Renaissance Souls, if you will. I've decided to put my dormant skills to use and make a living for myself. Of course this will not be until around March of next year but it is in the making and I will keep you posted. Until then take a look at some of my past creations--things I made before becoming adept with a sewing machine-- and if you are interested get ye over to my new blog

The Age of Innocence

My focus of study here in Italy is Renaissance and Modern History studies. I mostly focus on the Italian Renaissance and the culture of that time period. I am planning to do my dissertation in the future on Afro-European leaders of the Italian Renaissance, however, I would like to write not just about the ones in Italy but in other countries all over Europe during the "modern period" here on my blog. Starting next week I will write a post a week on these leaders; providing you with facts and ultimately ending with where their blood lines ended up today. But today I want to talk about the age of innocence, the romance period, the period of enlightenment and indulgence.

Italy brought the world out of the period of The Dark Ages with the dawn of the 'rebirth' or age of enlightenment, also known as the rinascimento aka renaissance. During the Dark Ages, there were numerous religious wars, pestilences, plagues, darkness. Most people could not read and the nobility had a strangle hold on the peasantry. The Church, was corrupt and controlled everything and women were subjugated.

The Renaissance brought about the Romantic Period of chivalry, courtly love, knights of valor, Protestantism, new ageism, literature, artistic expression, opera, the middle class, the use of the vulgar (layman's) language, literacy, polyglotism, new world discoveries, world trade and indulgence.

This is not to say the Age of Innocence was not fraught with problems, there were still wars, intrigue, over indulgences, assassinations, The Inquisition, modern slavery, Cristoforo Colombo, new world discovery* (yes I put it on both lists) and corruption. The church still had a stranglehold on power, but it was losing its grip on the minds of the people--well the more enlightened/educated group of people. The peasantry of course was still superstitious and easily controlled and many in the nobility as well. Latin was being used less in everyday life and literary works thanks to Dante Alighieri (Dante's Inferno) and the nobility were fighting wars in the name of God for power and nothing more. Seems things never change, eh?

The Renaissance produced the first world banking system courtesy of the Medici family, checks (as in check books), loans, patronage of the arts and greats such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Petrarca, Machiavelli, Casanova and Shakespeare.

Needless to say, I love this time period to say the least. In fact I truly believe that I lived a past life in Florence during this time period. I hope to eventually do a fashion shoot using the clothing from the Venetian Romantic Period and make-up. I have been spending lots of time looking for work and watching make-up tutorials on Youtube. For now I will leave you with my make-up inspiration of the day.

Its been a while

02 December 2010
But I have been running around like a chicken in search of a job which seems to be scarce everywhere these days. I have also been working on a few projects that I hope pans out in the upcoming new year cause I need it.

The number crunching has begun but I am not as stressed as I usually am about it. Both of my new websites are up and I am very satisfied with them. Today I was planning to go look for work but it is rainy and cold so I am postponing until tomorrow and Saturday I am going to Tuscany for the bi-annual, Wedding Blogger festaggiare. School is going well, my first test is at the end of January and my new classes do not begin until the end of January.

On Tuesday I received my Permesso and I have been screaming since. I finally feel official here.

Hope all is well in your world.

Ladies' Night

22 November 2010
Last Friday night was epic. Ok it was just fun times with my ladies Alessandra, Fede and Gaia. I have been collaborating with these awesome ladies on weddings and photo shoots to promote their photography and wedding planning businesses here in Italy.

Friday we decided to do a girls night where I teach them how to do their own make-up and of course pamper them a little by giving them their own personal make over. Alessandra got her Marilyn look and the other two girls opted for smokey eyes. And you know me I was willing to oblige. Any opportunities I get for a photo-op I take it.

This Saturday, Ale will be teaching us how to bake and I will be studying for my exam in two weeks and researching my latest obsession Alessandro de Medici, Il Moro the first black (biracial) head of state in the western world. I am seriously obsessed with the Medici Clan. Like I said before Florence is my all time favorite city in Italy and I truly believe that I lived there in a past life because it makes no sense the connection I have for it. I am planning a trip there next week and I will make sure to post as many photos as possible.

Until then, enjoy the photos from Ladies' Night

One of those days I will be posting info on places I frequent or that is hip around the town I live in since I have been receiving lots of emails about what I do for fun here and the second post of the week will be randomness about my life or my plans or just Italy. So much to talk about..

Anyhow, have a great week. Until next post.

New Beginnings

14 November 2010
"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous."--Carrie Bradshaw

I have a had profound epiphany. "I am finally home." I have had such lovely encounters with individuals this past week, some that have left me speechless. Some that have filled me with hope and some that have healed parts of my wounded soul. But I knew that the latter would happen here in Italy. Italy is such a warm, welcoming and healing place. It is like the hot springs for the soul. A rejuvenating balm that sends sadness to the desert where it dies. A place that brings back laughter long forgotten.

I am happy, content even. I feel free. This does not mean that there aren't any hardships in my life. I still have not found a job. But what I have found is the most important thing in life--inner tranquility.

This blog is dedicated to all the relationships in my life, new and old. To the girls here in Italy that have been gracious and kind. To the men who have been flirtatious and sweet. And to my friends and family back home that have been supportive.

Thank you

The Sweetest Occasion

10 November 2010
In the last month I have collaborated with an excellent team of ladies and fellow bloggers here in Bologna on some projects. Most were related to weddings and all they entail. I am pleased to present some photos from the last collaboration. I have not been given the go ahead from the first shoot, but once it is approved, I will published those pics as well. If you know anyone wanting to get married in Italy, we have a whole team waiting for them here, including, wedding planner, photographers, set designer, invitation designer, caterer and even a place to host the wedding. Enjoy.

Non é ancora fluente

08 November 2010
I am rounding up my 3rd month in Italy and although my Italian has improved I am not yet fluent. I was expecting it to take at least six months to solidify and so far I am working towards that trajectory.

I have closed out two of my social accounts, taken my final exam for my Master's in America--still waiting for the results, forse la settimana prossima, I will know something. During this time I have taken on two pupils--teaching them the basic Italian that I know for their moves to Italy next year. A good friend of mine will be attending the University here to study Languages and the Arts and the other new friend, an Italian-American wanting to get in touch with his Italian roots contacted through FB and I am helping him as well. Yes, I find it ironic that a Black American is teaching an Italian American Italian but hey my life has been quite peculiar thus far. Anyhoo, he will be moving here for 6 months to research and perhaps study the culinary arts. They are both excited and willing pupils and I look forward to teaching them.

In the process I have decided that I too WILL be fluent in Italian in the 6 months time period that I allotted myself, seeing that I studied the language for the last 3 years in a class room and know how it works. Now I just need to practice and find new ways to express myself w/o translated.

During my quest to find study materials for my pupil I stumbled upon this blog. This fellow is a quest to become fluent in a new language every year and you know what I think its a good idea. One of the dreams on my bucket list was to become fluent in 5 languages in my life time and I have found the tools and inspiration to do so. So first, is Italian. I will keep you guys posted on that. And go over there and follow that blog.

I will soon be writing another post over @ BB & W. I will let you know when. I am still looking for work and hopefully the irons that I have thrown into the fire will begin to heat up.

Until next blog

Ending my addiction…

04 November 2010
Hey Bleeps,

Its been a while since I have posted. My aunt came into town last week and subsequently made me ill for the last week. I have also been working on some 'gratis' projects to get my name out there as a make-up artist in Italy. I finally got listed @ Make-up Directory
I have also been studying for my exam while simultaneously being distracted by social networking sites. As well as helping an Italian American learn basic Italian via gmail--he is very determined to connect with his heritage. I recently decided to do away with all of my accounts except my blogs. This was my post to my friends and family. I hope it inspires some of you.

-------------------------------

Hey friends and fam,

I have decided to do away with my social networking sites. Yesterday I saw so much on Twitter that just grieved my heart and I realized I moved to Italy to finally live and not be inundated by images and languages that are completely devoid of meaning. Instead I have been spending way too much time on FB and Twitter, when I should be living life, dating, writing, cooking, learning, working out, traveling, and actually practicing my Italian. Truth is I feel uncomfortable in my skin at the moment--unusual for me--so i avoid human contact..

But I have realized I have to break the cycle and stop being a spectacle of myself and practicing modern day voyeurism and get off the net. These social networking sites keep us distracted and detached from the real world. That is what they are set up to do.

If you wish to keep in touch with me you can by email at xxxxxxxxxx, skype @ xxxxxxxxx or by following my blog @ http://odisseaitaliana.com/ ---which by the way is the best thing and it will build my viewership.

I have a couple of projects that I will be working on and once they are on their way I will post info on my blog.

I will miss reading everyone's crazy statuses and posts but I must do this for me. My FB accounts will be up for another 4 weeks so everyone can get this note but I am starting the new year, technology 'free'

I love you guys for all of your support. You are the bestest.

Truly yours,

Last Saturday I spent a day in a quaint little villaggio 20 minutes outside of Bologna in the Apennine Mountains doing a photoshoot for a huge opportunity in Italy and America with Photographer Lelia S, Wedding Planner Laura, and decorator Federica--until I know the full details I will keep you guys in the dark--but know you will be the first to know the details once I know.

I couldn't take pictures of the set or the models however I did get a few of the palazzo Castel Lazzo and the surrounding landscape. It is a beautiful place and amazing for destination weddings. From this photo shoot I was booked for 1, possibly 3 weddings next year. One is for certain at the locale and the other two will be in Positano and Lake Como respectively. Wish me luck.
[slideshow]

Today I spent half of my day doing make-up for four models for another photo shoot for Wedding Planner Alma Lu's Place and Photographers Federica and Gaia. Today was awesome but I had to return home early because I was sick. Ugg. Tomorrow, I will be tutoring English to a lady going to a conference in Rome and translating--more like correcting her presentation. Hopefully, work will begin to pick up cuz Lil T is running out of MONAY!

I have created a new wedding blog for bridal make-up and fashion. I also present information on destination weddings in Italy and contacts for said opportunities so pop over there from time to time to see what I am discussing, especially if you are getting married soon. My actual make-up portfolio website will be up soon. When it is finished I will post the link here as well.

Enjoy the slide show and I hope I will be writing a blog in the future telling you guys about the big photoshoot and all it entailed.

Italia–the Terrible

14 October 2010
Tomorrow I have a very important photo shoot and I will be spending time job hunting since I am running out of cash. I have some awesome ideas that I need to follow up on. My blog post over at Beyond Black and White went exceedingly well, however I got a major outcry from my Italian friends for not giving a complete picture of the Italian culture and landscape. Mind you, I did not see any point of adding what I am about to put here on this post on a post about interracial dating in Italy. Remember the following is a generalized overview. There are always exceptions to every rule, so your experience and someone else's experience could be completely different.

For those of you who have been emailing me about Italian men and are they truly what people say and are Italian people really opened minded, the answer is yes and no. I find that Italian men mainly south of Tuscany are very attracted to women of color because of the Moor conquest (Moors are people from North Africa that have mixed heritage) and the Italian conquest of Libya and Eritrea. They are used to seeing dark skin and features and are more open to interracial 'coupling'. Mind you there are plenty of men in the North who love more than blondes, however if you are darker, you will have more luck in the central to southern part of Italy.

There is also the Madonna/Whore complex that most Italian men suffer from. It is due to the dominant Catholic culture and maschilismo--no English term for this; it is the opposite of feminist-- society here. What is the Madonna/Whore complex you ask? The Madonna/Whore complex means that women only fall into two categories, Madonna--i.e. girlfriend, wife, serious relationship, good girl-- or whore--well you get the picture. And once you fall into one of the categories you are never set free from it. There is no flexibility in a woman's sexuality like you would find in say France or England. Now don't go tripping because you know this complex also exists in the States. And it dominates--just watch a few music videos and reality tv shows and you will see it staring you in the face. So girls who want to just come here to have flings, you may want to think twice about that if you eventually want a serious relationship down the road. And remember Italy is a village--EVERYONE knows everyone's business.

What about racism you ask? Well, the racism or as I refer to it prejudice that is the strongest in Italy is between Northern Italians and Southern Italians. There is a major hatred of Southern Italians by Northern Italians, it even goes as deep as Northern Italians claiming that Southern Italians are a different race of people. According to historical data, this is pretty much fact however, I say they share a common land and language so to me they are all Italians. The country that is known as Italy was settled by different groups of people such as the Osco-Umbrians, the Etruscans, Ligurians, Raetians, Latins and the Italics in pre-history.

After the dissolution of the Roman empire, the Southern part of Italy was conquered many times and the Island of Sicily was conquered some 500 times by varying groups to include the Greeks, French, Moors, Arabs, Turks (Byzantines), Africans, Spanish, Normans and Romans. In fact there is a rumor that Sicily used to be an island of people mixed with Black African blood, by which many of them would assert as well. Consequently, the first black Madonna statue was created in Palermo, Sicily in the 14th century and the second in Naples.

Sicilians are probably the most diverse looking group you would ever see. There are some blonde haired, blue eyed Sicilians, some dark, some with hair as curly as mine, and they are very PROUD of their heritage. Never call a Sicilian an Italian, you might get cut. Seriously.. Now this is where it gets funny to me, the North claims the southern Italians are a different race because of the many different groups that have conquered that area of the country, HOWEVER the north has been conquered just as extensively, by the French, the Lombards (german tribe), the Gauls (a gaelic tribe mainly out of France), and the Goths. And subsequently the mixing of both groups (southern and northern) within the population. So no one, if this criteria is asserted, living in Italy is Italian. But hey, I am just visiting so I can never understand the beef between the two regions, like no one can understand the racism in America except those who have been discriminated against there. To me it is the classic, light skinned vs. dark skinned, north vs. south, industrialists vs.pastoralists debauchery that exist in many colonized states and most everywhere.

Secondly, because this rift between the North and the South, a political party was created called the Lega Nord. The Lega Nord is advocating for the disbandment of Italy into federal state giving each region or state in Italy the right to rule its region autonomously--which would make Italy similar to the United States pre-Civil War. Mind you this system didn't work the first time, but most folks have their own agenda and throw history to the wind. This political party is also advocating the succession of the North from the South, kinda like the Confederates but the reverse. The argument here is that the northerners work longer hours, produce better businesses and product and are in essence, more intelligent than those in the south who are happy to be ruled and controlled by the Mafia and farm their entire life--mind you this is not altogether true although there is some truth in the assertion about the rule of the Mafia in the south--which is another topic altogether--but believe me, those in the south dislike the Mafia just as much as those in the North.

Despite all of these negative things going on here, not to mention the bureaucracy that is out of this world, Italy to me is still one of the most enchanting places on earth. To be honest most of what I mention, if you don't KNOW the language or culture and if you are not Italian than you never really see it. In fact, the positives outweigh the negatives. But I had to write about it so that you all know the real deal and not come here with stars in your eyes, completely oblivious.

For me, I am having the time of my life. I have not been discriminated against thus far--knock on wood and the only place that I have not liked in Italy is Milan--initially--the last time I went I had the time of my life but I think it was because of the company I was in. But this is just MY personal experience. Your experiences may be totally different.

I hope I have enlightened you. Until next blog, watch some La Dolce Vita or Under the Tuscan Sun and enjoy the landscape and the joy that is Italia!

Big News, good news

12 October 2010
What a difference a shower makes. Right now I am just vegging out on my bed after a day spent in it due to a stomach upset and lack of sleep. I miss class today. Damn, but it was so worth it.

Class has been great. Each day I sit in, I understand more and more what the teacher is saying. I figure by next semester I will be fluently understand what all my professor are saying. I am very excited about this school year, more than any. Maybe it is the challenge of passing a class that is taught in a language that I do not speak fluently. Who knows.

I have already decided what I am going to do my thesis on and also my future dissertation as well. My thesis will focus on the Jewish Influence on art and culture during the Italian Renaissance. My dissertation will be on the Black African influence on the Italian Renaissance to include Black african leaders --for which I found one--as well. I find all these things fascinating, not to mention it puts me in a niche market for colleges. I have found only one professor in the known universe who has done extensive studies on black african influence on the Italian Renaissance and he teaches at Cambridge--will keep u posted on that front--its two years away.

Another wonderful thing that is happening for me right now is my post on the Internationally acclaim blog Beyond Black and White is finally up. I decided to write a post about interracial dating abroad for my fellow blogger Christelyn.

I am very excited about the post. I want the world to see that life is not just about black and white but about those beautiful shades of gray.

As soon as I finish my course work for this semester--and in the interim try not to kill this screaming 3 y/o above me--I will begin writing my memoirs that I have been wanting to do for such a long time. Believe me at 34, I have seen and experienced a lot and still feel as if I have more to learn but I would for people to read my journey. I had a recent brain storm and decided how I will go about doing it. I will keep you posted.

Until next blog--where I will talk about my seduction of an older Italian gentleman (in my dreams)--I hope you will pop over to Christelyn blog and read my post and others.

Ciao Ragazzi!

Plans and Plans

09 October 2010
Good day my fellow minions. I know it has been 2 weeks since I have written but school started this week and I have been busy and to be honest I am lazy about posting. However I promise to be better. I am going to set up a post rotation so that I can post more often. like 2x a week often.

At the moment I am doing a lot of planning on my end. I have decided what my thesis will be on. I have also decided what my future dissertation will be on as well. But I will leave that discussion til later.

I have been having a good time. I have met some wonderful people recently who are helping me get my feet on the ground here. I have started the process of translating my resume so that I can start looking for work. All of my past careers will be coming in handy here, especially my medical and cosmetics background.

In fact I have a photoshoot on the 15th with fellow Italian blogger Laura who is starting her wedding planning business here in Bologna. I will be doing make-up for the model.

The other thing I am working on is a post on Interracial Dating abroad for fellow blogger Christelyn who has taken the blogging and media world by storm with her No Wedding No Womb campaign in the States.

So a lot of things are in the works. As soon as every thing is up I will post about it. Expect a post in a few days detailing my first week of class. I hope you guys are finding yourself well and happy

Until the next full moon!

Venezia and More

24 September 2010
My friend Feather has been here for a week now and we have had a good time and it was the respite that I needed after the first grueling 3 weeks here of chaos. Never knew how much a friendly face and warm heart would serve me. While she has been here, we both were dazzled by Venezia and underwhelmed by Atlantic City's dopple-ganger Rimini and laughed til we couldn't stop because of a lost in translation moment with a new friend of mine who thought I was inviting him to my home for a threesome with my friend Feather when in fact I was asking him to tell the Taxi driver where to take us.

Leave it to say everything has been going well. School has been taken care of. I have my first appointment for my permesso on Monday and I start school the following Monday. I am excited to begin my immersion so to speak.

In a couple of months I want to begin my first project here in Italy. I will tell you guys about it once it is underway. A girl must remain mysterious you know.. Until then enjoy my photos from Venice..

Reinforcements

19 September 2010
My friend Feather has arrived in Bologna. Yay! so I am away for a minute from the blog to see the sights with the friend who I once made a vow with to meet in Europe about four years ago. Then, we were just planning a trip together but it seems that fate would have us meet here as she takes a 6 month sabbatical from the States and I have moved here for the next two years ;-).

At the moment, we are both on our computers typing away and listening to the cacophony of noises outside my balcony doors. The sound of dishes clinking, voices in Italian, a cello playing and chairs scraping across the marble floors; there is someone cooking something savory, we can smell the garlic and onions being sauteed on the gas stove--all of these things together are such quintessential European experiences.

It has rained the last two days here in Bologna, and the rain has brought with it a beautiful breeze for which my balcony are open to, and the smell of Fall. Fall is my ultimate favorite season. I have been dreaming about pumpkin tortellini, scarlet colored leaves and warm cider.

The first three weeks here were hell but I believe I am past the point of homesickness--that I didn't expect--and bureaucracy hell and at the moment I am just in awe of the fact that I am seeing my hard work and my dreams come to fruition.

Stay tuned to the "Traveling Bracelet" series. Where I take pictures of iconic places and the beautiful bracelet my good friend 'S' gave me. Have a great weekend and blessed Yom Kippur.

My Faire Verona

09 September 2010
Today I took a short 49 minute train ride to Verona located in the Veneto Region of Northern Italy. Verona is the home of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Giulietta!

I must tell you that this little towne is amazing. I can understand why Shakespeare called it his "faire verona". To give you an idea of the feel of the place, it is like Venice without the water or New Orleans without the jazz. The architecture is similar to that of New Orleans French Quarter. I was in love from the time I got of the train and saw the low ranges of the Alps facing me. I could live here and never get bored. The only thing I did not like was the food. It was quite bland. I like spice but I am sure I could find ways to remedy the issue.

Verona has historical significance from Roman and Medieval Times. It has a Medieval Castle near the city center and a Roman Amphitheater right in the middle of the city center.

Giulietta's home is about a five minute walk from the Arena and there is a little market where I bought two beautiful Venetian masks and a murano glass necklace.

I could so see women during the medieval times, women of the night wearing corsets, baring all, calling out to the men in the streets, inviting them to the dark corners of the cities. It still has that feel to it. I can hear the carriages rolling down the cobblestone roads and operas being sung on the streets and at the Arena.

I must say, there is so much to see. The city itself is so beautiful you do not even want to take your eyes off of it for one second because you think you'd miss something.

Here are some pics of my day trip.

caos!

05 September 2010
I have been in Italy now for almost two weeks and let's say all the preparation I went through was futile. Nothing has been in order and none of the information I was given was accurate which I am finding is how they do things around here in il bel paese. Oh did I mention no one will help you either?

I have spent a day walking in circles for 45 minutes looking for my appointment, standing in the street crying, loosing my cell phone and wanting to purchase a ticket to return home--which I wouldn't because I would be more miserable--being told that I was given the wrong information about scholarships because hey "all Americans are either rich or middle class so they do not need scholarships," and being told that there is no way in hell that I will get into a PhD program in Italy--we will see about that-- despite this chaos, I have decided to buckle up and go along for the ride and yes help people in the same predicament as myself.

My friend Giulia is starting a company here in Bologna to help those moving here to transition smoothly. It is aimed towards students mostly because the university has no one to help them at all. The head of international students does not speak english at all even though the consulate told me she did. Which to me is crazy seeing that English is THE common language amongst all of the foreign students here.

Despite all of this, I am happy. I found an apartment with an awesome chick Named Tony--more about that later-- and the city is amazing. Although it is not the city I see myself in, I do believe it will be awesome for the time being. The city is too university--too young for me. Its kinda like Austin and Berkley. You're either young or old here. There are middle aged people such as myself here however, they are either trying to act young, working, starting families or vagabonds. LOL.

The city is absolutely spectacular. And I cannot wait to share what I see with you. Hopefully next week I will go to the Church of San Luca to take pictures. But for now enjoy my slideshow of pics from my new home and city.

caos!

I have been in Italy now for almost two weeks and let's say all the preparation I went through was futile. Nothing has been in order and none of the information I was given was accurate which I am finding is how they do things around here in il bel paese. Oh did I mention no one will help you either?

Sono qui

26 August 2010
I have finally arrive in Bologna, $250 out of my budget for luggage, 16 1/2 hours of flying and salivating and openly gaping at beautiful Danish men in an airport. I have finally made it to my destination.

My journey is not over yet. I still have a test on the first of September to finalize my stay and I must find an apartment. I did however meet some really cool Americans from Pittsburgh on the flight over who will be attending the same school different program. So they will probably be my only American friends here. They too have the same agenda as I. Make as many foreign friends as possible, perfect the Italian and whatever other language they can pick while here.

I am excited. I still only understand about 70% of conversations however my ear is getting better and my response time is too. That will take a few months but I am not worried. Tomorrow I will go out into the city to listen, practice and talk as much as I can. i must prepare myself for next Wednesday's exam. I was told it is not difficult but I prefer to be over prepared than not prepared at all. Tomorrow I also get to see the first apartment of my list of places to stay and meet my potential roommates.

And I must say my friends and family back home sent me off in style and love. You guys rock.

Now my life begins. I must find out about working as well there seems to be some confusion there as well.

Ciao a tutti

I leave in 10 days

15 August 2010
Holy cow,

My departure is only ten days away or nine in some parts of the world. I am elated and nervous at the same time. I look forward to seeing my old friends and some of my new ones. I called my friend Antonella today. I have not seen her in 13 years. I met her when I first moved to Sicily. She and Alessandra made my two years there the best. She also told me that Alessandra who moved to England will be home in September as well. Yay! REUNION!

The last three months have been quite stressful. Shit, the word stress does not even cover it. I have gained about 25lbs and now I must lose that weight plus some. The first thing I will do when I arrive in Bologna besides get a cell phone, is buy a bike. It is the biking city of Italy, so why not. My friends G and M are on vakay so for my first four days I will be staying at Lucrezia B&B. I found them through the AirBnB site. The pictures look great.

I hate the airlines! I have to pay an additional $50 for a second check in bag to fly overseas. Don't they know I am moving man?

In other news, I am meeting other people online and through mutual connections that are waiting for my arrival and my new found family the Chiostergis will be waiting in Milano for me as well.

I am exhausted, my last day of work was Saturday but I am looking forward to this new journey. Now I must finish packing my mom's house to move and study for this test on the first.

On another note, my other traveling friend Feather has already arrived in Europe for the first leg of her trip. I am wishing her a bon voyage as she leaves tomorrow from Germany on her way to gay Paris. La Duree anyone?

Until next post.

Visa Process part 2

06 August 2010
I have begun my visa process for my travels to Italy. It just does not get any less stressful. Once I am there I will not be able to relax until after I pass my first exam-the entrance exam--that I must past to start classes on September 1st. Until then, i must gather documents for the Consulate to receive my Visa. For which I plan to have done by Monday.

1) 2 passport sized fotos
2)bank statements
3)travel statement
4)passport
5)letter from friend stating they will sponsor my lodging even if they are not

Talk about crazy.. However I am still very excited. I just bought my plane ticket. I fly out August 25th. Whoot! I have two layovers and 16hrs of flying. The most exciting plane ticket yet since I get to layover in Copenhagen. So I can add one more place on my list that I have "visited."

I bought my plane ticket fro $711 one-way on Cheap O Air. I have even guest blogged on the site. The wonderful thing about this price is that it is half the price of all the other site. My buddy pass fell through so I had to purchase my ticket. Most sites were quoting $1400 one-way. Craziness. All in all, it seems things are looking up for me. I am excited. I just need to make it through this last leg of the process. I can't give up now. I must make it to the oldest University in the Western world, founded in 1088. Holy Cow, that was right before the first Crusade. Talk about history.

Now back to studying and then to work. Have a good weekend
