Trend Alert: The Great Gatsby

28 May 2012

My favorite book by F. Scott Fitzgerald--and one that I will be reading again this summer-- is coming to the big screen again 38 years after the first adaptation in 1974 starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. This time Baz Luhrmann, fame director known for Moulin Rouge, Australia, and Romeo + Juliet has recreated this film starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Carey Mulligan.

This new film releasing December 2012, will surely be a showstopper. Not just because of its creative direction but its fashion. Giving a nod towards a time of liberation, decadence and just plain revelry.

This time period is one of my favorite when it concerns fashion, art and music. And I am excited that the flapper fashion is returning with a major modern twist. From menswear such as tuxedo pants, vests and bow ties, to flapper inspired dresses, tassel jewelry and embellished hair accessories to wine stained lips and dark silvery smoky eyes. And let's not talk shoes: t-straps, Mary Janes and brogues. This summer will be all about the glam. So get Gatsby-ed up for summer with these fashionable pieces.

Kentucky Derby Fashion

04 May 2012
The Grade 1 stakes races for three year-old thoroughbreds held annually in Louisville, KY every first Saturday of May is happening this weekend. Between 1875 and 1902, African-American jockeys won 15 out of 28 races.

"1872, Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition, traveled to England, visiting the Epsom Derby, a famous race that had been running annually since 1780. From there, Clark went on to Paris,France, where in 1863, a group of racing enthusiasts had formed the French Jockey Club and had organized the Grand Prix de Paris, which at the time was the greatest race in France.[1]"

It is the  Wimbledon of America--of course Wimbledon is Tennis but man do they love their hats, a place filled with amazing horses, fashion, and HATS!! Yes, hats! And old school tradition and fun.

I have a love of horses. I am from Texas. When I was a child my step-dad bought me a Shetland Pony.

In fact, I was very good with horses, they actually love me. My dream is to own a blonde Palomino one day.

The other thing about the KD that I love is the fashion and hats.

They are a throw back to the 1920s and 30s when the Kentucky Derby was in its hay day. Here are some awesome inspiration for you to prepare you for your day at the derby. Toodles!

Trend Alert 2012: Art Deco-rate

Good morning chicklets! Happy first day of Spring and Aries--my astrological sign. It has taken me a minute to write this post because I was suffering from a bit of blogger's block.

I love this era so much that I wanted to do it justice. I wanted to present it in such an artistic flare that you, too, would love it as much as I do.

This classic trend inspired by the 1920s women's rebellion movement and Jazz Age  and the likes of such designers as Vionnet and Coco Chanel, is fashion at its most artistic. You can do no wrong here. The gaudier the better. The more individualistic, the more true to form you are.

The Art Deco/Flapper Fashion era was marked by bold prints, moody jewel tones, black, silver, dropped waists, draped neck blouses, pleats, lace, velvet and shapeless silhouettes. This time around we have modernized it by incorporating bright beautiful colors along with the above. It is just magnificent.

Here are a few ways to incorporate the 1920s/30s into your fashionable wardrobes.

Mix menswear pieces like palazzo pants and brogue shoes with distinctly feminine statement pieces like cocktail rings, colorful accessories, feathered boas and shoulder baring tops. Don't be afraid to be artistic in your choices. Go big!

Art Deco

Pleat with flare by adding a long cardigan and colorful t-strap heels. T-Strap always make an ensemble uniquely 20s.

Jazz-Age

Makeup

Makeup in this period was all about smoldering dark eyes and bold lips and that trend is no different today. Here are some inspirations and a tutorial by Pixiwoo.

Art Deco in Interior design:

With its velvety, lush, bright and moody colors and silvered and mirrored surfaces, art deco interior design is the epitome of individualistic luxury and elegance verging on gaudy. In fact, most of the buildings in Chicago are done in this style and the Empire State building in NYC is also inspired by Art Deco. And the home of Boisset-Gallo family.
