An Ode to Rose Gold: SS2014 Metallic Trend

31 March 2014

Oh Metallics, how we love thee. In fact, we anticipate your return every spring and summer. Gilded lids and lips, silver streaked toes, are de rigueur. But this year, you have surprised us all. You have made us gasp, swoon, gaze in awe as you unveil your other sister. The one who is normally reclusive, who rarely shows up at the photo shoot each year. It's not that she's shy, it's more like she is more refine, over the scene. In fact, she is just too damn busy to be bothered. But this year, this year she has made a comeback. Rose gold, copper, whichever alias you wish to go by, we are happy you are gracing our pages this year.

For those fashion ingenue, rose gold is the pinky, sometimes orange-y sister of gold. She is also known as copper and boy is she huge this season. In fact you can dazzle your toes with her. Wear on your lids and you lips. Dress her up on your heels and clothes. Whatever way you choose to showcase rose gold, I promise you will get many compliments.

The awesome thing about this color, besides the fact that she is versatile and has been all over the runways this season is that she can be bold and she can subtle, from bright orange gold to rosey copper, rose gold will be THE metallic touted this season.

3 Off the Runway trends to rock this spring

22 March 2014
I don't know if you can feel it, but Spring is in the air. And hopefully like me you have already started to scour the net to find the upcoming fashion and beauty trends so that you can begin to prepare for the season.
To be fair, and as the resident fashionista, beauty expert, I am making it easier for you. I have poured over magazines, watched hours of fashion week footage and searched for images, just that you can have you own personal beauty bible for SS 2014. In order to avoid overwhelming you with information, I have decided to break the best trends into a few posts leading up to the season.

The wonderful thing about beauty trends is that they don't change drastically from season to season. More commonly, the colors lighten up for spring and summer and darken for fall and winter and this season is no different.

Tropical Blossoms:  Hot pink, Orange, and Coral

From New York to London to Bombay, notable designers Cynthia Rowley and Maria Grachvogel brought tropical blossoms to life on the lips of the models for Spring. A good way to add instant color to your dark fall and winter wardrobe while transitioning to Spring is to use a pop of color on your lips. It is also a good way to brighten your mood and add sex appeal to your pout. Did I mention that these colors are perfect for all skin tones? Here are few lip products that will make your smile pop this Spring.

5 Beauty Trends SS 2014: Pink, Orange, and Coral

**Quick Tip: Try using a matte or semi-matte lip color and add a light gloss on top.

Gold Rush/ Silver Streak
This trend is a classic Spring/Summer trend with a new twist.  Fame makeup artist Pat McGrath created this signature look for Dolce & Gabbana's SS 2014 Collection. Instead of doing a metallic on the lip she opted for a soft petal pink instead to give it a more romantic feel.

At Jason Wu, we see the trend take a bolder stance with this gold dust eyeshadow.

Silver was also on the runway. Silver was found on the lids instead of the nails at Ann Yee.

Quick Tip: Try Mixing metallics. Use a lighter gold on the lid and a dark smoky silver gray on the outside corners.

Classic Red

This is a classic that saw a ten year decline then popped back on the scene like gang busters in 2008 and is still going strong. Who could ever get tired of red lips? Did I mention blue tone red lipstick make your teeth look whiter? Red saw an insurgence on the runway this spring from Dolce & Gabbana to M.A.C. in India's Fashion week.

I know I know, I can hear you shouting at me now, but Tanishay, I am too dark to wear red. Only prostitutes wear red. Blah blah.. No one is too dark or too light to wear red lipstick. And red heads can rock it too.You just need to find a shade that goes with your skin tone. And trust me, I've never seen a hooker wear red lipstick, ever--too messy. Rule of thumb, if you have yellow/olive undertones you want to wear blue/tone red lipsticks and if you have pink undertones you wear orange tone reds. Some reds are great for all tones, like Ruby Woo from M.A.C.

Quick Tip: When using a red lipstick make sure to use a lip primer and red lip liner to keep the color from bleeding on your face and teeth. For a light coverage blot with tissue or put a sheer gloss straight on the lips.

Beauty Trends SS 2014: Pretty in Pink

05 March 2014

This is my ode to pink. A color, that if I were put into as a child, I'd scream bloody murder. I hated the feminine soft color, so Barbie, so girlie, so submissive. I was everything but. I was a certified tomboy. I could climb trees with the best of them. That was then, and this is now.

I now understand that only a few of those things are true about pink. What I have discovered over the years is that red is the powerbroker, pink is the silent partner and in most cases the silent partner holds all of the power.  Red screams SEX, pink whispers it. In fact, pink doesn't have to say anything, you just pick up on its vibes.

Pink has this way of helping us tap into our super subtle side. It lets people know, we are just as confident as red, but in a different way. Top designers such as Burberry Prorsum, Dolce and Gabbana, Prabal Gurung, Topshop and others have rediscovered the power of pink by making it the focal color in their collections on the runway.

From shimmery pinks to matte and petal stained lips, pink made a stand on the runway this SS 2014 in garments, accessories, and most of all, beauty.  With this trend, we see the designers take a color normally relegated to blonde Barbies and 50s housewives and reinvent is purpose to be used not just on the lips or fair skin, but pink demonstrated its versatility by appearing on the darkest skin tones, on the lips, on the cheeks, and on the lids.

With all of that being said, get creative this spring ad use pink in a creative way.  Try it as an accent color on your lids with charcoal gray or chocolate brown. Also try as the focal color by wearing it on the lips with a winged out eye. Another way to present this beautiful pastel color is on the nails, especially the toes. Last, but not least, try pink on cheek. Make sure to pick a color that matches the depth and hue of your skin tone.
Here are some great products in pastel pink to try this Spring/ Summer.
