African Queen Indeed

27 February 2013
Looks like Número magazine is in hot water again for the photo spread entitled "African Queen." Where Caucasian model Ondria Hardin is painted to brown perfection to represent Africa.

What I do not understand is why is it necessary to do this? If it isn't bad enough, black models, especially dark skinned models, are sadly underrepresented in the fashion world so why not just use a black model to do a shoot like this when it is called for? How would it look if we took a model like Alec Wek and cover her in cream colored makeup, sit her on a throne with a scepter and title the shoot "The Nordic Queen?"  How well would that go over?

What's more, the shoot would have been beautiful if it wasn't for this situation, but there you have it.

I normally don't talk about these things on my blog, but this is the fourth instance of this in the fashion world in two years and it is time to just say enough is enough. What do you think about this latest fashion faux pas?

Oscars 2013: G.T.L., Naomie Harris and Anne Hathaway

As I am in S. Korea, I was not privy to Hollywood's fellatio of itself in the guise of the Academy Awards this year. However, I truly enjoyed the pics of the starlets that came out over the wire a few hours.

I have taken those photographs and created a mini-series on the beauty trends and looks of the night. My first set goes to golden goddess Naomie Harris and pretty in pink Anne Hathaway. They both look ravishing in their own way and I was excited to put together what I thought their makeup artists put on their faces for the evening.

Enjoy, and don't be afraid to recreate these, especially for a prom night or wedding day.

Golden Goddess Naomie Harris

Naomie Harris stepped onto the red carpet with an amazing glow. The hue of her skin was complimented well by her golden frock and her barely there makeup was perfection. Here's how to get the look.

Pretty in Pink, Anne Hathaway

Anne stepped out in a pastel pink dress. She combined it with a matte pink lip and winged out liner. This was a perfect contrast to her porcelain skin and raven hair.

SS2013 Trend: Monochrome, One Piece 3 Ways

24 February 2013
Spring is upon and there are so many awesome fashion trends in store for us as we prepare our wardrobes. One of my favorite trends at the moment is the Monochrome trend. It's all black and white and seeing the world without the shades of gray.

Jason Wu:
Unknown:
Dolce and Gabbana:
The contrasting colors are very harsh in the light of day but graphic and subtly sexy all the same. You know what they say, opposites attract.

I took this beautiful top from Dorothy Perkins, $49, and created three looks. I hope it inspires your wardrobe.

CHARGE!!! My Weekend Shopping Finds

17 February 2013
Ok, not really. I am definitely not Betty and Wilma. However, I did have fun shopping and making more jewelry this weekend.

S. Korea is full of underground shopping troves where you can buy great looking items on a budget.

I got this fabulous hunter green faux croc satchel bag.

So classic and so me. And the quality is quite good for the price I paid for it. Let's just say this bag was less expensive than a trip to the movies.

I decided to pair it with a necklace from my SS2013 collection. The Mythos Necklace features glass pearl beads, sun, moon and spear charms and green jasper beads.

I thought it went perfect with the bag. Now, all I need is an outfit and a pair of shoes.  I have been drooling over these shoes from Shoe Dazzle. I could order them now but I wouldn't see them for six months. It would cost me what I paid for them to be shipped here. So I will order them and send them to my mom to hold for me. #drools.

Then I bought this really cute yellow clutch bag and I soo look forward to styling it. I am feeling a nautical theme coming on..

Here are a few more pieces from the S/S 2013 Collection Serica Via.. The collection is based on the ancient cultures along the Silk Road with a modern twist of course.

Inana Protection Bracelet $15

Mogadishu and Anubis Spike necklaces $38 ea.

Inana and Ishtar Rosary Necklaces $38 ea

I hope you guys had a fabulous weekend. I know I did.

Toodles for now!

Chasing Away Those Winter Blues

15 February 2013
This just in.. Winter is here for another 5 weeks but that's ok. Even though we find ourselves in the grips of one of the coldest winters on record doesn't mean our wardrobe has to be, ermmm, frozen stiff... With NYFW coming to an end and the European Fashion Week circuit beginning, we should take a cue from the millions of street style photos running a muck around the web. A few trends being heralded as openers to spring is:

Fresh Mint and Turquotic:

Mint and turquoise are making a big splash this spring and what a better way to infuse a bit of hope of spring into your winter wardrobe?
Turq With It--Brighten Up Your Wardrobe

Peplum blouse, 41,285 KRW / Wool coat, 71,385 KRW / Warehouse knee length pencil skirt, 54,130 KRW / Warehouse bowler bag, 60,895 KRW / Leopard jewelry, 19,560 KRW / Cole Haan fat belt, 54,280 KRW / The Apartment - NYC Photo, Carrie Bradshaw's Apartment in Greenwich..., 32,600 KRW / HARTY, 106,500 KRW / Vogue Paris

White as Snow
Black is a year rounder. You can wear it at any time and in any season. But how can you freshen it up? White. Adding white to this chic color is a great way to brighten it up and give it a crisp feel.
Powder Blues- Brighten p your wardrobe

Tory Burch long sleeve blouse, 149,180 KRW / River Island , 37,015 KRW / ALDO bag, 59,675 KRW / Bracelets bangle, 18,985 KRW / Goth jewelry, 54,225 KRW / Shoedazzle

Carnival Day of the Dead

This trend is still going strong, three years after Alexander made skulls the focal point in his collection. Yes it isn't the Day of the Dead but skulls are hot hot hot hot and they are definitely a great way to liven up your wardrobe. Mix them with some floral and ethnic pieces and you are on a roll..
Brighten Up Your Wardrobe--Artistic

Long white sweater, 68,465 KRW / Vans shirt, 49,055 KRW / Plus size blazer, 24,995 KRW / Miss Selfridge , 57,595 KRW / Boot cut jeans, 101,495 KRW / ALDO high heels, 171,695 KRW / Pieces zip bag, 72,430 KRW / Necklace, 41,295 KRW / Black and gold earrings, 16,845 KRW / Sole Society

Navy Blues

Navy blue and crisp white are timeless and classic. They go well together in any season like black and white. By adding a pop of yellow, you have made this combo more modern and have definitely given them a spring appeal.
Brighten Up Your Wardrobe--Navy

H&M , 54,280 KRW / Tailoring pants, 32,600 KRW / Coach bag, 247,775 KRW / Necklace, 43,470 KRW / Charlotte Russe stone ring, 6,520 KRW / GALA quartz earrings, 163,010 KRW / Wilfred blouse / Shoedazzle

and last but not least....

Road Rage

Toughen up your winter wardrobe with a bit of faux leather--because we love animals--and studs. But don't use black leather, that just screams WINTER, but instead go lighter, with a neutral color like tan or beige, or if you can white. Add in some gold accents and teal and you are a success.. well at least at brightening up your winter wardrobe..
Winter Wardrobe Reboot

Bardot polka dot shirt, 89,760 KRW / Warehouse faux leather jacket, 97,585 KRW / River Island , 67,300 KRW / Audrey Brooke , 92,155 KRW / Necklace, 41,230 KRW / Monica Vinader gold band ring, 185,075 KRW / Sole Society ballerina shoes / Jules Smith art deco jewelry

I hope this has helped you ladies with some ideas to cheer up your Winter Blues. Until next post.. **Lattes and Lipstick Jewelry, designed and made by Tanisha Shulamit (me)
