Just when you thought it was too HOT for Wine! ROSES

27 June 2012
Just when you thought it was too HOT for Wine!
Roses are here to save the day

Ciao Bellas it is officially SUMMER and it definitely feels like in most part of America.  I am hear to save the day with a question I get all the time, since it has already reached a scorching 97 degrees in New York City, what should I drink in this weather? Especially for you Red lovers out there who don't want to fully commit to a White wine for the summer God answered your prayers by inventing Rose (French), Rosado (Spain), Rosato (Italian), or simply Pink Wine.

First things first please know that Roses are mostly derived from Red grapes such as Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Merlot  etc. and the process which gives it the pink or blush color is the contact the skin of the grape has with the juice.  Depending on the length of time the juice has with the skin will give the wine either a darker strawberry color versus a light pale pink color.

Most Americans think that Pink wines are always going to be sweet but please note that all Roses are not like White Zinfandel there is such an animal as Dry Roses.

So the Rose of the Day is - Casal Garcia  a Vinho Verde Rose

For all  Young & Ready Ladies  this Rose is for YOU!! As the producer even describes this wine as Young and Refreshing  on the label and that is completely true.  Don't know what to bring to a cook-out, you won't go wrong with this wine.  Looking for a nice easy wine for the beach where you won't be twisted or overheated, this is wine is for you. Last thing you want is to look drunk at Resort/Swim wear fashion show with your new couture swim suit.

Origin: Vinho Verde, Portugal - Europe
Price: $9.00 USD retail
Grapes: Vinhao, Azal, Borracal
Appearance: As you see from the picture above its strawberry red color, there is a little effervescence which is typical for vinho verdes (which also comes in whites btw).
Smell: Red berries with a hint of citrus
Taste: This wine is not out to fool you.  As complex as wine can be this wine is exactly smells and looks like.  The taste is simple and is close to wine version of Strawberry/Raspberry Sprite. Acid level is medium/high and tannins which are gripping in the beginning have a short finish which is important when you are sitting in the sun.  Everything is very balanced and very fruit forward and there is a hint of tartness and sweetness from the fruit. Vinho Verde was made with the weather in mind to keep be enjoyable in the hot weather.  Many of my clients say they actually have seen this particular wine in the supermarkets while visiting Portugal.
Pairing: This wine is very versatile from meats to salads.  Very enjoyable with salty foods and seafood or even with a simple fruit salad.
Please comment  your thoughts  or questions about Rose or Vinho Verde.

Music Find: Blind Benny

18 June 2012

This duo is made up of New York Native and songstress and songwriter, Jade, who perfected her craft in her father's church and who admittedly states that, “I'm obsessed with human behavior. I live vicariously through everyone," and Jonathan Carmelli, guitarist and producer. These two met in New York when Jade was working on another project when they decided to work on their first Album, It's My Heart, Cookie. It was here that Jonathan decided to forgo his acceptance into Berklee College of Music in Boston and remained in the city.

During their time working on It's My heart, Cookie, they were able to perfect their sound which is evident in their new EP, No Honor. This album dabbles into a world music sound that keeps those listening wanting more. Their first release, No Honor, has a afro-latin guitar hook and Jade's dulcette vocals takes a rock-esque edge that blends fantastically with this unique sound combo.

Sweet, Sweet, a throw back to the 80s pop-rock movement is one of my favorite tracks and next is Goodness which channels the down tempo movement and is reminiscent of Nouvelle Vague. Chewjitsu gets its sound from the Red Hot Chili Pepper 90s with a somewhat late 50-ish sound mixed in and is reminiscent of sunny days at the Bu, Malibu. There wasn't a track I didn't like on this album. It will be money well spent.

I was able to get a hold of there management and they were generous enough to give the readers of L&L a free download of their first track on the album.

Go check them out on Facebook, Youtube and their official site. Blind Benny is definitely an indie duo that you won't soon forget. They are hot, hot, hot. In fact, I suspect they may have produced the 'it' tracks of the summer.

Menswear Trend: Rock n Rolla

I have searched high and low, to find some awesome trends for the men that frequent L&L because of course I do not want to be a sexist and leave you all out of the trendsetting crowd, as if to imply only women want or need to look amazing on the arm of her fella. Let's keep it real, women like to dress to the nines, but we also like our other half to look just as fabulous.

So with that in mind  and with the  suggestion AND collaboration  of  a friend and my fave Irishman , I have put together tougher--than the preppy look-- yet elegant inspiration pieces for you guys. I hope these boards will inspire you to update your wardrobe, and move away from the days of baggy pants or Hawaiian shirts,  to a better more stylish you, fabulous enough to be seen hanging on the arm of your lady love.

Rock N Roll Skater-boy
Rock N ROll Skater boy

Why it Works

This ensemble is fabulous for just going out to the mall or for lunch with your lady love. Although more suitable for cooler you can definitely transition it to spring and summer months by wearing a crew neck or graphic tee. And men, remember this mantra, dark wash jeans are in, dark wash jeans are in. The awesome thing about dark wash jeans is that you can dress them up or down, they are flattering--because he wants to have mom butt? and they are a serious nod toward I am not 18 and immature. So make sure you go out and get you a pair. Everyman should have one in his closet.

Why it Works

Brown and gray are just a fabulous fashion combo, even better that black and gray. It tends to be more chic, more euro, more I know to dress and put colors together without looking like I tried too hard. Although, again this ensemble is fabulous for the fall and winter, these awesome boots are great all year round. The ones to the right are reserved for those cool enough to wear boots that looked aged but if you don't think you can pull off mavericky like a hot rocker walking the streets of London, then lean more towards the shoes to the left. In order to make this outfit work for warmer months, try a long sleeve tee from JCrew or H&M.

Rock n Rolla--Casually Chic

Casually Chic-- Rock n Rolla

Why It Works

This outfit is so effortlessly chic. It reminds me of the stylish men in London in NYC who always look so well put together in a graphic tee, flat front pants and a light weight blazer. This shoes and jewelry complete the ensemble, making it more casual than dressy.  The quirky jewelry gives the mostly black ensemble personality.

Announcement:

L&L Will be moving to Tumblr in the next weeks. This site and all of its fabulous information will no longer exist. Please make your adjustments accordingly.

My World Music Quest

When I was younger, I was lucky enough to come of age in a time where ethnicity did not play a big part in musical society--everywhere else, yes--but the 80s was a time of the great cross over. British super stars was kicking our asses on the rock front and we had soulful singers such as Lisa Stansfield, Teena Marie and Rick Astley invading our air waves. Introducing us the non-BP that had soul across the globe. Then there was J, the Japanese hip hop dance troupe that was all over the telly showing us that our culture was loved all over the world. And the Hawaiian family group The Jets. And we won't even start on the mega fame of Michael Jackson. It was because of these times, that I was able to explore world music. My first out of the box world music star was Celtic Singer Enya. I would walk around the house singing in Gaelic and my family had thought I had lost my mind. They were like "You really think you are white don't you?" No, not really, I just had an international soul, I operated on a higher frequency that did not place me in an "ethnic" box. I was too big for that. Then Sade and Selena played a big role in my love of world music. Since then, I have traveled the world and have discovered even more international talents that I want to share with you all. The world is so big, much bigger than the trivial ethnic and inter-ethnic battles that we have on a daily basis and honestly I truly believe it is music that brings us all together. What is it about music, even when you do not understand what they are saying that touches the soul in a way that mere words cannot? What are some of your favorite international musicians?
