What does the Future Hold

27 January 2011
In my last post I stated that I may be leaving Italy and so it seems I may. Not because I do not love it here but because it has been almost impossible to find a job. Ok. IMPOSSIBLE because I have not found one yet and since I am neither from a rich family or independently wealthy (despite what the lady at the university said about Americans), I need to find a job to sustain my stay here. Although I knew it would be hard to find work here, I think the city I chose to study in has made that much more impossible for me and my circumstances.

At the moment I am throwing a few things against the wall and whatever sticks is where I will go next. What I do know is that America is not the place for me so I will return for a visit and then on to my next adventure wherever that may lead.

It is not set in stone as of yet, we all know that 2 weeks from now my whole world could change but as of now I am taking steps toward leaving. I definitely plan to be here through the middle of the summer so if you are around look me up. I love chatting and meeting my fellow bloggers and readers.

I have received numerous emails on how to move/study in Italy and advice etc, so I have decided to put together a series over the next few weeks to make the lives of those aspiring to come here easier. I pretty much did it all on my own so I made a few mistakes that I would not have made if I had known better. I do not count this as a failure, the journey has been amazing and I have met so many wonderful people and my love for makeup, fashion and photo shooting has been renewed. Not to mention my soul and spirit which really needed it after the last 6 years of my life. So I am very happy. I will keep everyone posted on my journey and the series will start next Tuesday.

Be on the look out and until next blog...

Fun times are to be had

25 January 2011
And they were had last night when I spent an evening at my fave restaurant with fellow blogger Yearlyglot who was visiting Italy for a month after spending a year becoming fluent in the language. He was a hoot, in fact I am surprised that we were not kicked out of the restaurant.

He gave me a few pointers on becoming more fluent in Italian and we laughed about how hard it is sometimes to understand Italians when they speak because they mumble. He speaks about 5 languages and has decided to learn a new language to fluency every year. Get over to his blog and be inspired.

I have so much to tell you guys but my life has been a bit cray cray.. I promise to write more on Thursday.. Hopefully by then I will also have the pictures back from the last two foto shoots I have done..

Buona giornata!

Alexander McQueen--My Inspiration

20 January 2011
When AQ committed suicide last year it was one of the saddest days of my life, aside from the death of Michael Jackson, Aaliyah and Ted Kennedy. He has been my favorite designer since 2006 when he did his Plaid collection for Fall 2006 RTW. I have always had a thing for plaid, in fact I think I was some Scottish queen in a past life. I love how he took a textile normally equated with Catholic school uniforms and stuffy Anglo aristocracy and made it chic and edgy. He had me hooked. Then last year he designed the costumes for Lady Gaga's Bad Romance (best video eva!) and I loved him even more.

When I was working for MAC they collaborated with McQueen and when we went to Update to see the collections coming out for the spring, I saw his name and screamed. Everyone thought I had lost my mind and most didn't know who he was, but I did! In fact I still have the lipgloss, eyeshadow and gold highlight from that collection. I am keeping them foreva!

AQ has been my muse for five years and he has gone and done it again, in absentia of course. He has inspired me with his keen attention to detail and use of beautiful powerful colors. His recent success was having the First Lady wear his beautiful red, asymmetrical-shoulder dress for the arrival of the Chinese President Hu Jintao. She looks flawless and so does the dress.

Long live McQueen!!

Diana Ross: Make-up Icon

19 January 2011
Earlier today I wrote a post on the make-up from the motion picture Dream Girls, of course it goes without saying that I cannot leave out the true make-up icon Diana Ross, the inspiration behind the original movie and remake. Sunday I have a photo shoot for which Ms. Ross is my inspiration. The eye makeup was unbelievable. Whomever her makeup artist, s/he was ahead of the game. So be inspired by a timeless icon who is sometimes forgotten in our fast pace society of hunting for the new BEST thing.

What's Inspiring me now

Hello Chicklets,

Lately, I have been watching movies that I love and taking a new look at the looks that were created by the makeup teams for the productions. This morning I woke up wanting to come up with some new ideas for a few photo shoots and I found myself watching Dreamgirls. I know that I noticed the first time I saw the movie in 2006 how beautiful the makeup was but seeing the film for a second time has given me a new appreciation for the makeup. It was beautifully done and well executed by a team led by Make-up artist Shutchai Tym Buacharern.

Here are some screen shots that have been inspiring me of late. I am thinking about recreating these looks for a shoot this weekend.

Sometimes I feel like Wonder Woman

18 January 2011
Yes, I used to dream that my bracelets were magical and could ward off evil if I clicked them together. Unfortunately, I no longer have those bracelets, however MAC Cosmetics has swooped in to save the day by launching a full-on, Boom Pow Bang! collection of magical make-up to replace those bracelets.

It's the AH-MAY-ZING MAC's Wonder Woman Spring 2011 Collection. It will launch February 10th in America/Canada. But of course since I now live in Italy I must wait until March for the international launch :(. Check your local MAC stores for launch parties. There will be one in Houston on February 1, 2011.

I am in love, love, love with the colored mascara. I'll take two of each please.

Foto Shoot in Firenze

16 January 2011
Today was an awesome day. I had the opportunity to work with the amazing photographer Pasquale Maria Salerno whom I originally thought was 'Maria" because that was the only name my brain registered when I saw it on ModelMayhem.. Let's just say, we had a laugh out of it.

Anyhow, we did a photo shoot at a city 'villa' outside of Firenze that was built at the turn of the century circa 1909. The photo shoot was named Fashion Through the Ages, or at least that is what I named it because we had a wardrobe whose style ranged from the 1920s-1960s. In fact my favorite fedora that I bought at Buffalo Exchange in Montrose, Houston, TX, my large flower and pink 'diamond' rings made appearances in the shoot. We had the time of our lives. I don't think I have had this much fun in Italy since arriving, and I have had some fun shoots.

Pasquale is an amazing photographer and needs to make a book, if only he would listen to me..:D He is the only photographer that I know who does not use a digital camera.. period.. And the models Nathalie a beautiful girl of German/Brazilian stock, born and raised in Italy and Cecilia a Tuscan girl made for a fun and creative shoot.

The wardrobe was from A Ritroso Vintage Shop in Florence. It is owned by Camilla Baracchi and is written about on Rose and Pearl Vintage blog. The clothes are originals from each era.

Here are some pics that I took at the shoot. I cannot wait to get the professional ones. Vintage fashion is meraviglioso! Enjoy!
